A terrifying secret weapon hits the city streets! A ruthless gang of criminals, featuring a shady piano player and an imposing, cold-blooded former convict known only as "Gruesome" (played by the legendary Boris Karloff), uncovers a scientist’s hidden breakthrough: a top-secret chemical formula for a gas that instantly and temporarily paralyzes anyone who breathes it in. When Gruesome accidentally inhales the vapor during a scuffle, he collapses into a death-like coma. Completely fooled, the police send his "body" straight to the city morgue—only for Gruesome to revive, overpower the guards, and slip into the night. This bizarre and puzzling incident immediately triggers the suspicion of the brilliant, no-nonsense detective Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd). When the gang later triggers the paralyzing gas to freeze guards and rob a bank in broad daylight, Tracy realizes he is up against an unprecedented criminal threat and vows to hunt down the syndicate at all costs.
Directed by John Rawlins, this iconic RKO Pictures production is widely considered the best of the live-action Dick Tracy film series, thanks to its fast pacing, moody film noir cinematography, and Boris Karloff’s menacing performance. An absolute must-watch for fans of vintage comic book adaptations, classic 1940s gangster films, retro detective thrillers, and old Hollywood crime cinema.
