Director’s Statement:
The idea for HELP came from a simple, terrifying thought: what if a person’s desperate cry for help sounded like the screams of a monster? Our film follows an exhausted nurse who, at the end of a long shift, believes she has been thrown into her own personal horror movie and has to survive the night against what she believes is a horrible monster. To portray to the audience her terrified state, we shot the main story with the gritty, classic energy of films like The Evil Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, making the audience feel like they are watching a vintage horror film because that is what our hero believes she’s living through.
This stylized horror stops abruptly when we reveal the truth: the flashback to her neighbor’s tragic accident with a shotgun is presented in a clean, objective, contemporary style. This stylistic shift is the core of the film’s experience. It’s designed to force the audience into the same realization as the nurse: the monster was never real, and the genre film they were watching was, in fact, a devastating misunderstanding.
