But as her blood-thirsty sourdough starter grows, Laila struggles to keep the monstrous mixture a secret. Ultimately, she must choose between her reality with Win and the wild fantasy her starter is serving up.
Director’s Statement:
Breadwinner is a story about obsession in the name of creation. Who hasn’t wished there was a quick way to become the best at something? Through the film, we wanted to embrace a female character capable of cruelty, selfishness, and ruthless ambition in pursuit of her passion. But we also wanted to have a blast making a sourdough monster movie, balancing both humor and bite in the story’s execution.
I owe so much of what the film became to endless conversations with our writer Nicole, our leads Arielle and Taylor, and our incredible department heads. I hope people have as much fun watching the film as we had making it.
