Director’s Statement:
I have a soft spot for misunderstood animals. I wanted to portray the process of clawing oneâs way out of depression by any means necessary as a deeply animalistic instinct, but an instinct that might only be triggered by a miracleâor a curse.
The script was my attempt to verbalize the dread-filled pit in my gut that deep down, I recognized as suicidal ideation, which manifested as The Bonecatâa cryptid from the eerie forests and marshes on the Georgia Fall Line where I grew up.
The Runner is a misunderstood animal herselfâa woman of color isolated in white suburbia, overwhelmed by chronic pain, burned by previous medical intervention, compelled to lick her wounds in secret.
Even when society advocates for s*icide prevention, it’s taboo to speak openly about personal struggles. But I’ve learned if we donât dredge it up, name it, and drag it into the light so it can heal, it will fester. I want to drive genre conventions like a wedge between an audience and their deeply-held beliefs, to crawl under their skin and plant seeds for discourse.
I COULD JUST DIE is for anyone who’s managed to claw their way out of s*icidal thoughts, and for those who didn’t make it out alive.
