Director’s Statement:
"It Draws Closer" began the moment I reached to turn my lamp off before bed and thought, “What if something was under my bed right now?” And just like that, I was five-years-old again. Terrified of what monster might be lurking underneath.
I started writing the script that night. I couldn’t get that thought out of my head. It was so simple. Such a primal fear. I couldn’t help but explore it. With each rewrite I did, with each scare I planned, I reminded myself to keep it simple. Keep it to the early fears we all had when young. Because those fears… they last forever.
I wanted to tell this story because it scared me, but also because I was afraid to tell it. Not because it was a large movie, full of complicated themes. But because it was a small film. A short film. A silent film. See, I’ve been away from making narrative films for quite a while, focusing most my time producing documentaries, so much like Erin Ownbey’s artist character in this film, I was afraid of what I was creating. Afraid to mess it up. To waste everyone’s time. But that fear was also the reason I needed to make it.
Yes, "It Draws Closer" is small, but it was a large step for me to get over my fears and get back on set. I hope you enjoy the film as much as I enjoyed being on set, watching our incredible, small team put it together. I hope it scares you as much as it scared me to make.
