After stumbling upon an abandoned bike and backpack, Mary steals the bike along with a cassette tape from the bag. Once getting back to the home she shares with her sister, she decides to listen to the tape on her walkman. Listening fills her with euphoric pleasure, but her sister interrupts
her, making Mary realize she was about to stick a needle in her own eye. Although experiencing the danger of the music, Mary willingly gives in to listening once more, this time spreading the danger to her sister. After a close call, Mary flips the tape to the B-side containing dark recordings of Lily, the
previous owner. Mary quickly returns to the spot she found the tape at and finds Lily’s body in the woods. In fear of ending up like her, Mary breaks the tape. But over breakfast the next day with her sister, Mary realizes she won’t ever be able to escape the callings of the tape.
Director’s Statement:
Mary’s Mixtape was born out of my own sensitivity to music. The idea that a song can briefly transform the world around you and manipulate your perception to the present. I wanted portray that feeling through the supernatural cassette tape while also using it as a metaphor for the alluring but destructive habits we knowingly return to. Stylistically inspired by classic 80s slashers, the ambiguity of It Follows, and Lynchian unease, the film shows the terror of temptation: even when we know the cost, we press play anyway.
