Director’s Statement:
My ideas often come from where my real-life experiences meet my love of genre films. This script was partly inspired by my time working as a support worker with vulnerable adults dealing with mental health issues and addiction. That job took me to a lot of seaside towns, where I saw the effects of coastal poverty up close.
The character of Seagull, our protagonist, lives in that world. There’s a striking contrast between the bright, cheerful image of the seaside, the arcades, the tourists, the ice creams, and the social decay that sits just behind it.
This short film acts as a proof of concept for a feature I’ve since written and developed, expanding on the world and themes we first explored here.
