With a hurricane raging outside their hospital, two nurses have one last job before evacuating: stow a newly-arrived corpse in the downstairs morgue before the building floods. But when they pull off the sheet to reveal the body, they find a terrifying sight: a young woman bound and blindfolded, with a crucifix nailed into her chest. Soon, mysterious visions begin to appear to the lead nurse, her darkest personal fears coming to life right before her eyes. And from that point on, she is driven inexorably toward the truth of what this dead woman really is.
Director’s Statement:
Wake is first and foremost an exercise in tension. Using our familiarity with the “is this corpse really dead” trope to set the audience’s expectation of a certain kind of terror, and then milking it and twisting it so that the thrills come in completely unexpected directions. I also wanted the supernatural elements to be a vehicle for our hero to wrestle with the very real-world fears she’s dealing with, because just as her aging mother is wrestling with her own disconnect from reality…this corpse will produce a similar effect in the mind of our hero. For me, using monsters to convey real-world fears in a way that makes them more palatable and relatable is what the horror genre does best.
