Meet Melody; at fifteen, she is outspoken, intelligent and creative. Melody enjoys hanging out with her friends, keeping up with 70s pop culture, and dreams of performing in her school talent show. The problem? Her strict father, a traditionalist who shakes Melody’s world overnight after sewing a zipper onto her mouth on her sixteenth birthday.
ZIP was created during the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The film is dedicated to the Iranian people, with particular focus on the women’s voices and the power of music.
Director’s Statement:
ZIP was shaped by my background as a singer-songwriter and the reality that a musician’s life in Iran can change overnight. The project was later green-lit by the Crazy8s Film Society and produced through an intensive eight-day filmmaking challenge with the support of Vancouver’s film community.
My goal was to translate a long history of silenced expression into a single, accessible image. The zipper became a visual shorthand for censorship, while the 1970s aesthetic is a nod towards the history of Iran. I am grateful to everyone who helped bring this film to life, and to the audiences who continue to give it a voice.
