Director’s Statement:
The Auteur is about entering a world of unseen expectations. That was what I connected with when I first read the script; someone pulling the strings, whose motives couldn’t be deciphered until it was almost too late. I recognised my own fight to form my identity in a world where I was expected to be a certain way, and it felt meta being my first time directing as I was truly figuring things out as I went along.
I’ve long turned to horror and thriller films to challenge and deepen my own experiences, including Chloe Okuno’s incredible work, so being on Alter alongside her fantastic short Slut is a massive honour. My one hope for audiences, aside from the massive fun to be had visually where the film draws from Argento, Carpenter, De Palma, is that someone recognises their own struggle and recognises that they too can take control of their own narrative.
