Reviews:
Following a long series of comedies and historical films, Corbucci branches out into the Western genre, which would ultimately propel him internationally and cement his place in the history of what would be known as "Spaghetti Western." All of this was done under the pseudonym Stanley Corbett and co-directed by fellow French producer Albert Band.

James Mitchum (who I mistook for his father Robert throughout the course of the film) is great as our lead, a man who, having completed his vendetta (in a scene reminiscent of the opening of Inglorious Basterds), returns to his hometown in hopes of the tranquility he longs for but instead sees himself caught in the crossfire of two families whose feuds cause some form of terror in the community. In many ways, I agree with many critics that the film takes its influences from classic Westerns like Shane, but there are elements and structures that would come to define the Spaghetti Western. Interestingly, the historian and reviewer highlighted Leone (with whom Corbucci had previously collaborated), who released a subgenre-defining film, A Fistful of Dollars, the same year. But it doesn’t stop there; I don’t know whether I’m crazy, but I was able to listen to some of Morricone’s iconic compositions for that Fistful on multiple occasions.

All in all, despite its lack of originality in comparison to other Westerns, it is worth watching because of Mitchum’s great acting, the film’s good premise, and Corbucci’s effective direction."
