From working in the secret Navy O.S.S as a cameraman, Lt. Ray Kellogg’s filmmaking journey begins. Transitioning to Hollywood, he became a key figure in special effects, contributing to cult film classics like The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), where his innovative use of miniatures and real lizards for dinosaur effects stood out. Kellogg later directed cult horror films such as The Giant Gila Monster (1959) and The Killer Shrews (1959), produced by Texas media mogul Gordon McLendon, which remain beloved for their campy charm. His expertise in second-unit direction and action sequences was crucial for major productions like Cleopatra (1963), Batman (1966), and The Green Berets (1968), where he collaborated with John Wayne. Despite his significant contributions to both high-budget epics and low-budget gems, Kellogg’s legacy has often been overlooked, though his work on Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) remains a career highlight. This documentary celebrates his versatility, creativity, and enduring impact on the film industry.
