The game is afoot in America! When a British secret agent carrying a vital document is brutally murdered en route to the United States, the British government turns to the legendary Sherlock Holmes for help. Holmes immediately deduces the agent was likely an assassination target and had convert the critical intelligence onto microfilm. He rushes to Washington, D.C., with his trusted friend, Dr. Watson, on a desperate mission to retrieve the secret before it falls into the hands of a dangerous "international spy ring."
Convinced the spies haven’t yet found the document, Holmes follows a trail of harassment, eventually tracing the enemy cell to a seeming-respectable antiques shop. Hidden in plain sight, the microfilm has been passed inadvertently into the possession of the ringleader, Heinrich Hinkel (alias Richard Stanley), hidden inside a "V for Victory" matchbook. Facing a cat-and-mouse confrontation and a daring rescue by Watson and the police, Holmes must outsmart the enemy, lead them on a false trail, and ensure the safety of Washington debutante Nancy Partridge. This fifth entry in the iconic Rathbone-Bruce series is a original story and a masterclass in cinematic suspense.
Directed by Roy William Neill, this 1940s Universal Pictures Sherlock Holmes classic expertly blends Gothic mystery, espionage thrillers, and wartime intrigue, showcasing Basil Rathbone’s definitive portrayal of the master detective on American soil. An absolute must-watch for fans of classic film noir, vintage spy stories, whodunit mysteries, and the golden age of Hollywood cinema.
