In the "not‑so‑distant future of 1968", ships cross the North Pole to move passengers and cargo, but a wave of vanishings brings traffic to a halt. With routes blocked by a strange vessel, Dan Wendover orders the specially equipped submarine Tiger Shark to investigate and pursue it beneath the ice. The intruder is piloted by a being from beyond Earth, whose mission forces the crew to make a decisive stand.
