*What is “The Best of Men” about?*
Near the end of World War II, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a determined refugee from Nazi Germany, arrives at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. He is shocked to find spinal injury patients sedated and neglected, suffering from bedsores. Wasting no time, he introduces a radical new approach, removing outdated equipment and eliminating sedatives. This puts him at odds with the strict Sister Edwards and the arrogant consultant Cowan, as well as the skeptical patients. However, Sister Edwards eventually supports him after seeing that he treats the men as human beings rather than just patients—talking with them, organizing musical activities, and encouraging sports. As word spreads, the government begins sending all their spinal cases to him. With outings to the pub and wheelchair sports led by an army sergeant, the patients begin to admire him. After the war, Guttmann initiates national wheelchair sports events, laying the foundation for what will become the Paralympic Games. A final note reveals that in 1966, now a British citizen, he was knighted for bringing dignity and hope to those once forgotten.
