Dr. Julien, a general practitioner in Marseilles, primarily serves patients struggling with drug addiction. When one of his patients dies at his practice, Julien succumbs to temptation and steals the deceased man’s money, hiding the body in a trunk. However, his actions are misconstrued, leading to him being wrongly convicted of the patient’s murder and sent to the Cayenne convict prison. After escaping, he finds refuge with an indigenous tribe, where he eventually has the chance to repay their kindness during a yellow fever outbreak. A young woman assisting in the fight against the disease inspires Julien to consider the possibility of a new and better life for himself.
