In Arkansas, a stagecoach is robbed by Colonel Brinkley’s gang. What the gang is really after is a treasure map one of the stagecoach passengers carries. However, Mr. Engel only has half the map. The other half of the treasure map is held by Engel’s partner, a Mr. Patterson. Even so, the gang kills Engel and steal his half a map. Later, Fred Engel, the son of the murdered stagecoach passenger, seeks help to find his father’s killers and retrieve the map. He contacts famous frontier scout Old Shatterhand and his Apache blood brother Winnetou. The three men set out to catch the killers. Fred Engel reveals to his two friends that his father’s missing map pinpoints the location of a gold treasure at Silver Lake. They head toward the farm owned by Mr. Patterson, Engel’s business partner. Patterson has the other half of the map and a daughter, Ellen, whom Fred is in-love with. Unfortunately, Colonel Brinkley’s gang has the same idea of retrieving the other half of the treasure map, since the gang already has the first half of the map.

Treasure of Silver Lake
Winnetou and Old Shatterhand chase after the unscrupulous crook Brinkley, who is trying with all his might to find the legendary treasure in the Silver Lake. Through murder and kidnapping he managed to get his hands on the secret plan for the treasure. In their pursuit, the two blood brothers are repeatedly stopped by hostile Indian tribes and have to watch as their adversary reaches the treasure cave before their eyes. Brinkley kills the guardian of the grotto and believes he has now achieved the goal of his dreams. But the dying guardian of the treasure can use his last strength to set a mechanism in motion that causes the entire cave to collapse.
The Winnetou westerns are great fun, vibrant, lively and imaginative and action-packed, and this 1962 entry starring Lex Barker as Old Shatterhand and Pierre Brice as Winnetou is the first of the long series featuring our two heroes and it’s off to a great start with Herbert Lom playing an evil gang member with much gusto and he’s devoid of any good attributes. He bullies his men and naturally double crosses some of them, but it wouldn’t be a western if he didn’t get his up commence. And it’s a fitting send-off.
