Director’s Statement:
How far would you go to get the recognition you deserve? That’s the question that confronts our main character in Five Star. We set out to make something funny and scary, and hopefully a little bit relatable. That feeling of doing everything you can to get a job done, but it’s seemingly never enough. It’s something that has definitely haunted me before, and it was a great jumping off point for a short.
From a craft perspective, in order to nail this specific tone, we had to do a lot of pre-vis work. Both comedy and horror can be two sides of the same coin, but a lot of planning had to go into making the beats hit just right. And once we had that plan, we could let loose on set, knowing what was most important.
