It’s the not-so-distant future in Post-Roe America and society has fallen to an extremist Evangelical theocracy. All abortion – or what the government terms “the undesirable procedure” – has been banned. Lily Williams (Lena Headey), master chef at the renowned Foal’s Steakhouse, lost her only daughter, Sarah, to forced birth under the federal ban. Hardened by grief, Lily faces haunting flashbacks of her daughter’s untimely death. When she learns that Philip Anderson, the judge responsible for denying Sarah’s abortion request is coming to dine at Foal’s, she seeks carnal justice for her child. In the kitchen at Foal’s begins a revolution.
Director’s Statement:
As a filmmaker, I aspire to build a cannon of queer femme hustlers, where the distinction between hero and villain is blurred, reimagining typically male archetypes as femme rebels. My protagonists often find themselves in brutal environments, and must turn to their own carnal instincts to sustain.
Since the supreme court overturned Roe v. Wade in the summer of 2022, I worry I may live to become one of my protagonists. I fear the collapse of church and state in the U.S., favoring an extremist religious minority that will step on the rights of uterine bodies and gender nonconforming and trans individuals. How have we landed in a time where the courts are moralizing life-saving healthcare? Every day I hear of legal battles in states banning access to safe abortions and gender affirming care. What does one do when the laws are corrupt? We dissent.
At its core, Long Pork offers a Queer expansion on reproductive justice. The film complicates the performance of femininity in relation to birth, reproductive choice, and mortality while also breaking down the gender binary in its call for reproduction liberation for all – not just cis women. I hope Long Pork awakens audiences to America’s brutal reality and empowers us towards collective resistance.
